Troy Simmons | Bombardier

Janus Portal
Miami-based artist Troy Simmons articulates a unique visual language derived from career-long experimentation with concrete, color, texture and structure. Inspired by his 2018 sculpture titled Vortex featuring organic and architectural forms, Simmons created the monumentally scaled, fully integrated JANUS PORTAL. This piece is titled, Janus Portal, named after JANUS, the mythical Greek God of entrances and exits / beginnings and ends. It aligns itself as a portal to Bombardier's long history of facilitating travel and Simmons' quest for exploration and cultural knowledge through travel.
The work’s cantilevered structure serves as an interior entryway to Bombardier’s state-of-the-art service center. The concrete exterior, hand-fabricated by Simmons, is reminiscent of the abraded urban surfaces which the artist specifies as the foundation of modern development, struggle and growth. Beneath this Brutalist facade, an undulating network of aluminum extrusions guide the eye through a corpus of pathways, appearing simultaneously synthetic and biological. The resulting installation inverts the building’s structure and dimensions to create a dream-like environment that captures the excitement of destinations to come. Two other elements comprise the overall installation designed by the artist: BLACK STONE & GLASS, serving as the reception desk, and the adjacent ARC, a furniture element functioning as a coffee bar.
