For over three decades, the Bakehouse Art Complex has been a creative incubator for artists to work, share ideas and contribute to each other’s careers. Through this process of stimulation and support , the artists have continued to breathe new life into an otherwise deteriorating building.
Simmons' installation "BERCHEMIA" physically interacts and connects to one of the main columns in the building, becoming as one with its structural support system.
The name Berchemia originates from the scientific species Berchemia Scandens, a system of climbing plants or vines. The plant is known to wrap around neighboring trees, supporting and in most cases destroying its host while growing toward sunlight. The sculpture illustrates the symbiotic relationship between the artists and their role in the building’s future.
