Troy Simmons is a Texas-born Miami-based sculptor. His work reflects the Arte Povera movement in his use of common materials. Simmons’ inspirations are drawn from his Texas childhood and explorations through the piney woods of East Texas. There he discovered a parallel between his upbringing in the Houston neighborhoods and the destructive, yet necessary growth patterns of the Berchemia Scandens plant. This formative encounter was the catalyst that sparked his ongoing interest in art, architecture and nature.
Simmons ongoing series titled Durchbruch, explores the extreme growth patterns of plant-based organisms. The work is a bridge between the natural world and human sociological struggles. Durchbruch, a German term for ‘breakthrough’, illustrates the need to stretch beyond our physical and mental limits, pushing through adversity to survive.
Simmons’ more recent series titled Perception, is the collaboration of unrestricted experiments with color, material and structure. He uses common material such as concrete, fabric, salvaged wood, steel and aluminum, to create pieces that explore his thoughts on social behavior, identity and our relationship with the built environment. “My process challenges the laws of construction. I meticulously create each piece, randomly destroy portions of the work (revealing its structural composition), then repair it. The impulsive acts of hammering, dropping and sometimes burning the pieces, make room for a new unpredicted direction in the work. This destructive process gives the piece a role in dictating its final form. It provokes a continuous curiosity for me and the audience, urging us to look past the exterior, in search for what’s beneath the surface.
In 2016, Simmons was approached by Goldman Global Properties to incorporate his sculptures into the façade of a 16,512-square-foot commercial retail/development in the heart of Wynwood. The monumental sculptural installation was completed the summer of 2020. Miami-Dade's Art in Public Places and Bombardier recently commissioned Simmons for a new facility at the Opa-locka Executive Airport. The project is scheduled to break ground in December 2020. Simmons was also short-listed for his proposal for Norwegian Cruise Lines’ new terminal at the Port of Miami.
Simmons most recent exhibitions include VOLTA BASEL (2019), ART PARIS (2019), Dialogue: JanKossen Contemporary Chelsea, NY (2018) and Nuovi Orizzonti: Venice, Italy (2017-2018). He was also a recipient of the 2018 Oolite: Ellie Creators Award. Simmons earned an Architectural Technology degree from Oklahoma State University and studied Environmental Science at Sam Houston State University.
